An interesting view of this article is that the author is clearly blaming 
Dell for creating an opportunity for a buyer to misconfigure (in the 
author's opinion) a new computer purchase.  He recognizes the high 
popularity of Vista even so:

"But seriously, most consumers are going to be rather upset as they simply 
want to buy a PC that offers the famed Vista 3D effects."

The Linux advocates have often chanted "How can you compete with "free"?" as 
a way to suggest that Windows was bound to decline in acceptance and so 
increase Linux use, but here is the obvious answer.  The OEM's support costs 
encountered in supplying an OS other than what the consumer is expecting and 
has experience in using makes adding OSS warez a negative advantage.

But could Linux be provided as inexpensively as the freeDOS platform or 
would the expected support costs drive the price significantly higher?
