The open-source world is based on networks of trust. In order for
developers to be accepted into a given project, they have to gain the
trust of the existing involved parties. Much the same applies to eg.,
journalists, of course, or GPs, or plumbers or mechanics - if you don't
trust them, then their work is either useless or not wanted.

Novell have very aggressively shown that they have no interest in
retaining the trust of the community, which shows that in spite of their
acquisition of SuSE, they do not comprehend how that community works.

I wonder very much just what the seniors of Novell have been promised by
Microsoft; they have seen the demise of SCO, and must understand the
road which they are now on. Do MS promise to pay them off when Novell
collapse?

In any case, once trust has been /lost/ it becomes much harder to regain
than it was to gain it in the first place. A brief observation of
Microsoft's behaviour shows that they have no interest at all in gaining
the trust of anyone and I do wonder if, deep down, the CEOs of all
proprietary software companies just wanna be Bill Gates?
