[News] [Linux] New Reviews of Gentoo 2007.0 and RHEL 5

Review: Gentoo 2007.0

,----[ Quote ]
| While Gentoo has kept up graphically with its sexy interface, it's
| been left several miles behind in terms of usability as the elite
| for Linux enthusiasts. The problem is that it's missing so much
| genuinely helpful GUI configuration, even enthusiasts are going
| to start considering an easier life.

The Super User

,----[ Quote ]
| Gentoo remains an excellent choice for users who want a completely
| customized distribution with an excellent package system, but it
| will never be practical for many Linux users. The inclusion of a
| graphical installer seems helpful, but it ends up taking away the
| instruction and customization that a by-hand Gentoo installation
| can provide. Anyone wishing to get into the meat of their machine
| should stick with the installation instructions provided with
| Gentoo and go through the process himself.

Want to Learn Linux? Start With Gentoo

,----[ Quote ]
| Most people, of course, aren't interested in this level of
| appreciation, content to outsource that understanding to other
| people. And I suppose I am a bit of an anomaly, since one of the
| first things I'd do if I won Powerball would be to build my own
| car. But for those of you that are interested in Linux, there
| aren't many better places to start than Gentoo.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 review

,----[ Quote ]
| Sex appeal doesn?t seem to be the focus of this release. Instead, Red
| Hat makes a strong statement in its competitive infrastructure in the
| form of well-executed virtualisation and user session controls in its
| RHEL5 release.

Red Hat author dishes on RHEL 5

,----[ Quote ]
| There are still parts that can be greatly improved, as with any software
| when it is first introduced. Because it is open source, it is important
| to provide these types of new technologies so that they can be used by
| the masses and so other developers and companies will get behind it. A
| few of the known issues such as the virtual Machine Manager not being
| able to start the VM are listed in the RHEL 5 release notes. However,
| this particular issue has a workaround by starting the VM from the
| command line first. This issue is also discussed in my book.
