Embedded devices (chips) are sold at a pace of about 10 million per day (over
10 million per day in 2006). I don't know how many of these use a
stripped-down version of Linux, but with so many GPL violators it is difficult
to tell. Most of these chips are doing some fairly basic functions, so they
are unlikely to require Linux. A recent study did suggest that due to the low
cost of Linux more of the simplistic systems embrace Linux anyway. It's a
trend. This doesn't translate for money, but it shows you how dependent the
world has become on the kernel hackers.
Remember that laptops and desktops everyone keeps raving about are just less
than 2% of the whole market. How Microsoft had people equate computers to a
large box on a desk (or to Windows) is a separate question. Branding plays a
role too.
Did you know that Microsoft appears to be canning its embedded Windows efforts?
It's currently trying to invest more in it (it has already tried dumping it at
the cost of $3), or con some companies into patent traps.
"7" might not put it in the most convincing of ways, but his message /does/
contain an element of truth.
