Examining the Legendary HURD Kernel
,----[ Quote ]
| In 1987, the GNU Project began looking for a kernel. One option was 4.2 BSD,
| with the remaining AT&T code rewritten. Another was a new research kernel
| being developed at CMU, called Mach.
|
| Since those days, HURD has acquired the same reputation in operating system
| circles that Duke Nukem Forever has among gamers.

If Linux wasn't made, there would be the GNU operating system (see FSF Web
site) with all the Linux volunteers spending their time on HURD probably.
Tackling the 800-pound ESB Gorillas: An Open Source Perspective
,----[ Quote ]
| Undoubtedly, as the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) continues to emerge as a
| hallmark of service-oriented architecture (SOA), the competition between open
| source and proprietary products will continue to heat up. Granted, ESB is a
| well-established category of infrastructure software.

The Technical-Critique of gNewSense
,----[ Quote ]
| My reason is that gNS was not properly organized. I mean the creation of gNS
| was as disorganized as the creation of Hurd. after 20 years, Hurd is still in
| development, I read the history and all the technical papers and searched all
| the Hurd mailing lists archives and found out that problems, that lead to the
| failure to release the Hurd at proper time, were non-technical. if design of
| Hurd could be well organized we could have been using a Hurd OS now without
| all of the that Proprietary shit like Skype, ttf-ms-fonts kept up to date in
| repos by distros like Arch and CRUX. Hurd could have been a major player in
| today’s social environment but my point is not Hurd, my point is gNS. All I
| am saying is that I see a Design-Pattern emerging 2nd time.

In search of the GNU OS - First try
,----[ Quote ]
| Last night I sat down (with some caffeine and print outs) and had my first
| proper attempt at installing GNU. I've been reading as much documentation as
| I could find over the past week or so and I was led to believe that using the
| prepared CD images might be a better option for a beginner.

| GNU Hurd
|
| Shakthi Kannan has been working on a high-level system architecture diagram
| of the main components in GNU Mach and the Hurd. After several iterations of
| accepting corrections and other suggestions on the bug-hurd list, he came up
| with a diagram that was generally agreed to be reasonably close (PNG image,
| DIA diagram).

Debian GNU/Minix
,----[ Quote ]
| Finally someone has seen the light and started a project that I called for in
| a previous article. This melding of the Minix kernel with the GNU userland is
| called Preventa, and seems to poke fun at the name Nexenta, a similar project
| using the Solaris kernel, all in good fun I’m sure, considering that the
| project leader’s blog is called “La Salle Debain” (a play on “Debian” and the
| French for “bathroom”).

The GNU Hurd
,----[ Quote ]
| This post was written for two reasons: one is to raise awareness about the
| existence of the GNU Hurd kernel and maybe bring it to the attention of
