Hello guys, been a while since I posted or followed the group. it is
nice to see it still active and some interesting stuff too.
Right at the moment I am sat on a Vista machine, sorry got no choice
where I am right now. But thought I would sing the praises of Linux
for a while which is my OS at home.
First my home server. I am a firm believer in Home Servers and have
been for many years, not only as an extension of the client hard
drive, but also in the use of services. For example all downloads are
done by the server, graphic rendering too and many others. I sometimes
wonder why I bother with a client (other than the wifi part).
My current Server OS, I use two. I have a Debian 5 in a VM which is
dedicated to Postgresql, ruby rails and web app development. Then the
main is Mandriva.
I love the new Debian, I switched from the previous Debian when 5 came
out and I can not say that I have had a single problem with it. My
logs are wonderful to look through, there has never been anything
worrying in them.
My VM controller is VirtualBox running on the Mandriva. I was sort of
tempted up until recently to move to VMWare, but the last update of
VirtualBox has fixed the few problems I was getting.
As for Mandriva as a server, I can not claim that it has been as
trouble free as the Debian. Not serious problems and each was fixed
within a week of installing. But now that it is settled it does an
excellent job. The problem with Mandriva tends to be that they make
changes, such as the way they approach the Monitor and graphics
settings, but give you not a single clue how to work with their new
system. You find by accident that it has changed, then are left to
find out for yourself what Mandriva have changed.
I did have Mandriva as the client on my laptop too, But I was so
impressed with Debian 5 that I put it on first as a VM, but I was in
there all of the time and not bothering with Mandriva, so I put it on
properly.
By the way, I usually, as we all do, load the OS, then the Postgres,
then go through the setups, build the menus etc. But not this time, I
found a single install on the Postgresql site that put my Postgresql
in, setup a few base applications such as Joomla, phpadmin (it gave me
a choice of about 10 apps), put the key tools of postgres as well as
my chosen applications on my menus. It was such an easy install that I
was doubting that it could have done it all. But it did.
Anyway, thats it, my Linux do their jobs very well. I still read the
Linux mags, but rarely follow anything in detail. Most of my time is
spent developing or using now. All of those years ago first hoping
that Linux would make it as a mainline server, which it did obviously.
Then hoping Linux would make it as a client, which it has done.
I can not think of a single problem that I have in my daily work that
is caused by Linux. (They are plenty that are caused by my code, but
thats another story).
Cheers
