Group targets open source cloud computing
,----[ Quote ]
| Executives from Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo are calling for developers
| to create an open source software standard for cloud computing. They showed
| their work on the effort—some of it still at a very early stage—at a
| gathering of researchers creating a test bed for cloud services.
|
| The trio joined with three academic research institutes to form the Open
| Cirrus group in July 2008, each dedicating computer servers with a total of
| 1,000 cores to form a distributed network of systems as a research platform.
| On Monday, three more research groups joined the effort—the Russian Academy
| of Sciences, South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research
| Institute and MIMOS, a R&D arm of Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology
| and Innovation.

Red Hat Sees Strong Demand For Cloud Computing
,----[ Quote ]
| As many as 50 of its customers have begun building private compute clouds
| using Red Hat Linux, says Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst. A few are
| investigating "semi-private clouds," in which they plan to share IT resources
| with trusted partners.
|
| Speaking at the recent Federal IT on a Budget Forum in Washington, Whitehurst
| said Red Hat sees a "a ton of demand" for private, semi-private, and public
| clouds. As an operating system and middleware provider, Red Hat doesn't have
| a bias toward private or public clouds; both are business opportunities for
| Red Hat.

Private Clouds Better for Security, Red Hat CEO Says
,----[ Quote ]
| A private cloud could offer almost all the benefits of a public cloud, but
| without the attendant security and privacy headaches, said Jim Whitehurst,
| president and chief executive officer of enterprise open source software
| vendor Red Hat.
|
| Moreover, if a company is running more than 1,000 servers, it could save
| money and become more flexible with its processor resources by building an
| internal cloud computing infrastructure.

Unlocking the cloud
,----[ Quote ]
| Open-source software has won the argument. Now a new threat to openness looms
|
| [...]
|
| But now there is the danger of a new form of lock-in. “Cloud computing”—the
| delivery of computer services from vast warehouses of shared machines—enables
| companies and individuals to cut costs by handing over the running of their
| e-mail, customer databases or accounting software to someone else, and then
| accessing it over the internet. There are many advantages to this approach
| for both customers (lower cost, less complexity) and service providers
| (economies of scale). But customers risk losing control once again, in
| particular over their data, as they migrate into the cloud. Moving from one
| service provider to another could be even more difficult than switching
| between software packages in the old days. For a foretaste of this problem,
| try moving your MySpace profile to Facebook without manually retyping
| everything.
