NICTA Speech: Government 2.0 â Co-designing A Better Democracy

,----[ Quote ]
| Open source software as an example of
| another, often less thought of opportunity
| for open and transparent government is
| through the tools we choose to use. Software
| underpins almost everything we do, whether
| it be for work, play or creative endeavour.
| To be able to scrutinise software â to see
| the human readable instructions and trust it
| has, if you will â becomes almost a
| democratic issue, for many in the technology
| community.
|
| [...]
|
| So we consider that the time is now right to
| build on our record of fairness and
| achievement and to take further positive
| action to ensure that Open Source products
| are fully and fairly considered throughout
| government IT; to ensure that we specify our
| requirements and publish our data in terms
| of Open Standards; and that we seek the same
| degree of flexibility in our commercial
| relationships with proprietary software
| suppliers as are inherent in the open source
| world.

New Aussie Supercomputer Runs Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| The fact that a new supercomputer runs Linux
| should hardly come as a surprise to anyone.
| What else would it run? W7? ROFL. Well, if it
| did run W7 Iâm pretty sure someone would have
| been all over the reporters for the Sydney
| Morning Herald making sure that they mentioned
| it in their article âAustraliaâs new
| supercomputer outflops the lotâ. However,
| since it isnât, the reporter had a discretion
| on what to report, and they didnât mention
| what operating system it ran. I had to look
| the thing up on Wikipedia, where it told me
| that it runs Linux â Centos actually.
