Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) daily build for March 15, 2010 runs with nomodeset on Intel 830m video!!!

,----[ Quote ]
| I thought Linux in general and Xorg in
| particular were throwing those of us with
| "older" Intel video chips under the virtual
| bus. I couldn't even get Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
| (10.04) Alpha 3 to boot on my Intel 830m (aka
| i830m and in my case Intel 82830 CGC)-equipped
| laptops, where my old standby of dropping
| i915.modeset=0 or nomodeset on the boot line
| would clear things up.

Lucid Community Progress

,----[ Quote ]
| One thing that we have been really keen to
| facilitate in Ubuntu is an ethos of just do
| it. I really believe our community should feel
| engaged to be creative in their ideas and be
| able to get out there and do it, with plenty
| of support resources so others can help them
| achieve their goals. I am keen that we donât
| have a bottleneck where creativity is limited.
| Of course, this happens from time to time, but
| we are always keen to resolve it where
| possible.

Running Alpha Lucid on the Dell T7500

,----[ Quote ]
| The T7500 is just stupid fast, and Lucidâs
| a nice interface for the hardware. I donât
| have enough up and running yet to do any
| legitimate comparative benchmarking versus
| my usual hardware, but itâs impressive even
| on trivial applications. The disk usage
| analyzer, for example, scans the entire
| filesystem in less than ten seconds; with
| either of my old machines, runtime was a
| minute to two, depending on what else was
| running.

Ubuntu 10.04: Waiting for the Lucid Lynx

,----[ Quote ]
| I'm particularly interested in this
| particular release of Ubuntu since I've
| been using the previous Ubuntu LTS 8.04
| Hardy Heron and am looking forward to
| upgrading. For those of you in the same
| boat, if you want to keep current on the
| moment-by-moment (almost, anyway) changes
| to Lucid, you can sign up to receive email
| notifications.
|
| Waiting for something can be difficult and,
| after all, in the world of technology, six-
| weeks is almost an eternity. If patience is
| your virtue though, April 29th is right
| around the corner.

Lucid Sound Applet Gets Improved

,----[ Quote ]
| One of Benjamin Humphrey's "16 things to
| improve in Ubuntu 10.04" concerned Lucid's
| new-look sound applet - a small, square,
| inconsistent little box.

Ubuntu 10.04 Icons Re-Coloured Purple...

,----[ Quote ]
| With the familiar brown tones of Ubuntu of
| yore being replaced with vibrant purple hues
| in the recent re-branding, the
| 'purplification' of the default icon set had
| to occur sooner or later.

VMware shops now eligible for free SpringSource tc Server licenses

,----[ Quote ]
| Now, NPC runs three tc Server instances in
| an Ubuntu Linux VM, where each VM is
| configured with just 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM.
| When performance is a problem, "there is no
| limit, you just add another VMware box,"
| Brisbin said, adding that "the more I spread
| out the load, the more users I can support."

An insight into wrangles in the Ubuntu community

,----[ Quote ]
| If there had been some sordid attempt to try
| and push Draper out of the Ubuntu community,
| the group which has congregated around the
| most widely used GNU/Linux distribution,
| then it was worth a story. But a little
| digging came up with something entirely
| different.

Ubuntu 10.04 To Hang Onto Old Intel Driver

,----[ Quote ]
| With Ubuntu 10.04 being a Long-Term Support
| (LTS) release, Canonical is just going to
| stick with Lucid Lynx being the last release
| where Intel user-space mode-setting is
| supported, albeit for most Intel users you
| will still be greeted by a KMS experience,
| just with an older driver and many back-
| ported patches. This decision was shared on
| the ubuntu-x mailing list.

Ubuntu 10.04 Gets New Logout Dialogues

,----[ Quote ]
| Did you ever get annoyed by the
| restart/logout/shutdown countdown timers
| that presented themselves in previous Ubuntu
| releases?
|
| [...]
|
| All three main 'session' dialogues have been
| reworded thus allowing the user to make an
| informed choice as to whether the action
| selected it the one they want.
