Frankensteinâs Netbook
,----[ Quote ]
| Unless you have a real reason to want XP
| (gamesâ sigh), or OS X on non-Apple
| hardware (gamesâ heh), you really are just
| setting yourself up for a headache down the
| road. Ubuntu installs fast, is very
| straightforward, small and netbook-
| friendly. Oh and there are even
| proprietary games for it these days too.
|
| I look forward to the day when $199 ARM-
| based netbooks with Ubuntu flood the market | ;)

Where is the Linux 'smartbook'?
,----[ Quote ]
| But first, let's try to define the
| smartbook. By some definitions it is simply
| a Netbook that runs Linux and uses
| processors based on a design from U.K.-
| based ARM, as opposed to Windows software
| and Intel chips, respectively. By another
| definition, it is all of the above but also
| an always-on, always-connected device, just
| like a smartphone. The latter definition is
| the one we'll use here because it's the
| original definition as provided by
| Qualcomm--a major smartbook player--and the
| closest match to most first-generation
| smartbooks. (Another definition includes
| tablets but we'll leave that out of this
| discussion.)
|
| Indeed, smartbooks remain a murky product
| category because no major device maker has
| announced one yet in the U.S.--at least as
| defined above. And on Wednesday, Ian Drew,
| the chief marketing officer at ARM,
| expressed dismay at the lack of products,
| according to a report from ZDNet UK. That
| report cites, among other reasons for the
| delays, the current lack of Adobe Flash
| optimization for smartbook operating
| systems.

| Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Moblin were very

| insanely stable, and supported all of the

Android and Chrome OS Look Poised to Accompany Other OSes
,----[ Quote ]
| Acer's Aspire One line of netbooks has
| been a huge hit, and the company continues
| to experiment with designs and software
| configurations. As the number of
| applications for Android has risen, it
| makes more and more sense for the
| operating system to run alongside Windows
| and various flavors of Linux. After all,
| Linux resides on many dual-OS systems, and
| Android is Linux-based.

Acer to bring out dual-boot Windows/Android netbook
,----[ Quote ]
| At a launch event for its TimelineX
| notebooks in Europe, Acer let it slip that
| it is working on an Aspire One D260
| netbook that will have dual-boot
| capabilities with Android and Windows,
| likely XP. An update to the Aspire One
| D250, it is expected to ship with the
| latest Atom processor, though technical
| specifications are not yet finalized. At
| the same time, Acer revealed a netbook
| running on Chrome OS is also due in the
