Ubuntu LTS 10.04, a Linux OS at Its Best

,----[ Quote ]
| It's convenient to have a server install
| that's entirely separate from the desktop
| install, and while it may not be as
| visually slick as the desktop version,
| that's not really what you want on a
| server. The install was straightforward; I
| really liked the package collections; and
| everything was functional on first bootup.
| Five years of support is good, and all the
| software installed was fairly up-to-date
| (within a couple of release points, which
| is reasonable given the testing cycle
| needed for a long-term release). Ubuntu
| provides security updates regularly, so
| any security improvements in more recent
| releases should be rolled out to your
| servers quickly.
|
| One problem I found was that the
| documentation available online is a bit
| shaky. In some cases, it still refers to
| earlier releases, which isn't very
| reassuring. However, Ubuntu is obviously
| making an effort with its documentation,
| and it's easier to find information than
| it is with some other distros.
|
| Overall, Lucid Lynx is an impressive
| offering and definitely something I'd be
| happy to use for my own servers. More
| console-driven system management tools and
| better documentation, would make it an
| even better option.

Ubuntu Linux for Windows Users

,----[ Quote ]
| The latest Ubuntu Linux release seems to
| have been a huge hit. Review after Review
| after Review have pretty much pegged it as
| the next best thing since sliced bread,
| but does this release of Ubuntu Linux live
| up to the hype?

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (Netbook Edition)

,----[ Quote ]
| For the last couple of Ubuntu releases Iâve
| been running the full desktop edition on my
| netbook (Acer Aspire 1). These have run
| fairly well, and Iâve even had Compiz
| configured to run the cube and other eye-
| candy such as wobbly windows â although this
| may in part be due to its slightly upgraded
| spec (1.5gb ram). However despite swapping
| Firefox for Google Chrome there were some
| aspects that were disappointingly slow, this
| was regardless of the processor-hungry
| features that I had running. As a result I
| decided to give the Ubuntu Netbook Edition
| a try.
|
| [...]
|
| The other advantage of upgrading to 10.04
| is that this version has long term support
| (LTS). Which means that Ubuntu will
| provide security updates for 3 years, as
| opposed to 18 months for standard releases.

Kubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 review

,----[ Quote ]
| The installation is dead simple, just like
| Ubuntu. If you have installed any Linux OS
| lately, you should not have any problem
| installing Kubuntu Netbook Edition. I
| installed it using UnetBootin which allows
| one to make a bootable USB drive.
|
| Out of the box, everything worked, from
| Ethernet to Wireless LAN â everything!
| This is great as most of the netbook users
| do not like wandering over Ubuntu/Kubuntu
| forums trying everything to work. Even the
| function keys worked.

Ubuntu Linux Netbook Edition 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

,----[ Quote ]
| Iâve been reviewing various Ubuntu
| derivatives and this week I thought it
| would be fun to take a look at the netbook
| version of Ubuntu.
|
| Ubuntu Netbook Edition used to be called
| Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but Canonical
| changed the name once this distro became
| an official edition of Ubuntu.
|
| [...]
|
| Summary: Ubuntu Netbook Edition takes most
| of whatâs great about the desktop version
| and wraps it up in a colorful, attractive
| netbook interface.
| Rating: 4/5
