KDE Software Compilation 4.5 RC1 Release Announcement

,----[ Quote ]
| Today, KDE delivers the second release
| candidate of the upcoming KDE Software
| Compilation 4.5. The final version will be
| available in August 2010 and this RC is
| intended for testers and early adopters
| who can help by finding and reporting
| bugs. It will also interest those who want
| an early look at what is coming to their
| desktops and netbooks this summer.

KDE Desktop Tricks

,----[ Quote ]
| I started using KDE when version 4.0 was
| out. I had had a taste of KDE 3.5, which I
| didn't like, but release 4.0 looked like a
| big step forward, so I was tempted to give
| it a go. Just like so many others, I found
| KDE 4.0 disappointingly slow, unstable and
| unintuitive. However, I did see lots of
| potential in it and kept using it release
| after release.
|
| Up until recently, I was mostly a GNOME
| user. I considered it faster, leaner, more
| intuitive... and certainly not as ugly as
| some say! No matter how hard I tried to
| like KDE, it would always feel a bit alien
| and I would always end up going back to
| GNOME. The tide has shifted lately,
| though, and I have found myself leaning
| towards KDE desktops more and more. I
| believe that is mostly a result of the
| incredible work the developers are putting
| in place to improve and polish the
| product, but also down to the fact that I
| have been learning more about its
| "secrets".

Looking at KDE, and looking at apps

,----[ Quote ]
| It looks like Iâll be at least making the
| migration from GNOME to KDE, even if I
| donât leave the *buntu family of distros,
| so I needed to make a list of what apps I
| use regularly and see if they work under
| KDE (without needing to install libraries)
| and if not what apps may do the job. Apps
| I now use are listed in BOLD text if I
| absolutely need to use it regardless of
| what distro I use, although if I can keep
| the same features in a different program
| that will be acceptable.

Akademy 2010: Almost Like Being There

,----[ Quote ]
| Not everyone can make it to Akademy,
| although given the record number of people
| captured in the group photo, it probably
| seems like everyone did.

KDE SC 4.4.5 released

| Several months ago I put together a REVIEW
| on PCLinuxOS 2010. Those of you who read
| it know that I love this distro and that
| showed in my review. I was thoroughly
| pleased and surprised with all of its
| features and found very little weak spots.

| BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD
|
| A while back I talked about KDE and how I
| thought it was growing more mature,
| appealing and an overall better desktop
| manager. That trend has been maintained
| since and there seems to be no stopping
| it. KDE SC is becoming and incredibly good
| and attractive desktop environment and the
| old claims that it was slow or resource
| eating are no longer founded. Moreover,
| the QT improvements easily translate into
| KDE and the end result is a better
| performing and functional product... Can't
| wait for KDE 4.5!!

KDE Software Compilation 4.4.5 Released: Codename "Ceilidh"

,----[ Quote ]
| KDE Community Ships Fifth Translation and
| Service Release of the 4.4 Free Desktop,
| Containing Numerous Bugfixes and
| Translation Updates
|
| June 30th, 2010. Today, KDE has released a
| new version of the KDE Software
| Compilation (KDE SC). This is expected to
| be the final bugfix and translation update
| to KDE SC 4.4. KDE SC 4.4.5 is a
| recommended update for everyone running
| KDE SC 4.4.4 or earlier versions. As the
| release only contains bugfixes and
| translation updates, it will be a safe and
| pleasant update for everyone. Users around
| the world will appreciate that KDE SC
| 4.4.5 multi-language support is more
| complete. KDE SC 4 is already translated
| into more than 55 languages, with more to
| come.

An evening with KDE 4.5 on Fedora 13

,----[ Quote ]
| Iâve not actually looked at the official
| feature list of the new KDE release
| because I wanted to give a use case review
| rather than just reeling off a list of new
| features. In conclusion, KDE 4.5 seems
| like a great release, indeed the best yet
| if the last few issues are successfully
| ironed out (which Iâm sure they will be).
| The best reason for upgrading will be the
| speed increase, which Iâm still really
| impressed with and the visual improvements
| are also a welcome feature.

Cornelius and Vincent Join Different Games

,----[ Quote ]
| KDE has recently launched the âSupporting
| Membership Programâ to raise funds for
| Developer Sprints, Akademy conferences and
| other activities of KDE e.V, the legal and
| financial representatives of KDE. President
| of KDE e.V. is Cornelius Schumacher and at
| the launch of Join the Game he made a pact
| with GNOME release manager and board member
| Vincent Untz that they would each join their
| rival's support programme. And talk about it
| to the Dot. And so...

KDE and Science

,----[ Quote ]
| Free thinkers. Curious people
| collaborating across borders. Pioneers
| pushing back the boundaries of what is
| possible. Teams building upon the work of
| others. People trying things just to see
| what happens.
|
| Those are all phrases that could be
| applied to KDE - or to scientists. The
| scientific mindset shares a lot with that
| of free software and so it is no surprise
| that there are plenty of scientists within
| our community, nor that KDE has some
| strong applications in the world of
| science.

KDE at SouthEast LinuxFest

,----[ Quote ]
| Celeste also gave a great talk about how
| KDE is EVERYWHERE! It focused on
| enlightening the Linux community about how
| weâre not only on the desktop, but are
| also spreading our technologies into
| mobile, netbook, and cloud based
| environments. She spent some time talking
| about how KDE is not just software but
| also a vibrant community including our
| developers and users. Finally she also
| covered some of the latest and greatest
| features of the 4.4 and 4.5 SC releases
| and introduced the new âJoin the gameâ
| campaign.
