I am not sure that these windows look like, but it sounds as if Konqueror is
getting copies of the destination files and saves them onto /tmp, from
which it then displays the page/s.

In KNode (KMail would be similar), go to Settings (top menu) -> Configure
KNode... -> Reading News -> Viewer -> Browser -> Open links with "Other",
then specify your Firefox path followed by %u, e.g. in my case:

/home/roy/Main/Programs/firefox/firefox %u

This simplifies things considerably.
