The trouble with this is that Ubuntu doesn't really compete with Vista,
rather, the linux distributors compete with Microsoft in getting their
software installed and bootable on shipped OEM PCs.
The required next step for mass adoption of Linux is for one well-funded
Linux distributor to get a PC supplier to install their product in
numbers, and make it available to the public. As long as Microsoft
prevent pre-installed machines from being made available to the public
in numbers, they will hang onto their monopoly.
Who has deep enough pockets to take on Microsoft in this last area of
monopoly abuse? Or, who can get government backing to stop Microsoft's
abusive influence?
