An addition: I would recommend to anyone having difficulties with
any OS to try a linux live CD. No installation and typically very good
hardware detection/setup. Most, like knoppix, Morphix and Damn small linux,
come loaded with excellent applications that are precooked and ready to eat.
It won't mess with any of your current installations.
It's also handy to be able to take your OS with you.
