Lyx is a niche application; LaTEX files are generally completely unecessary
for the grand majority of the population who are not scientists or textbook
editors.
There's no reason to use it just because it's easier than writer. Lots of
things are easier than writer, but the point is as always, the right tool
for the job. Lyx is the right tool for a research assistant formatting her
advisor's latest paper on protein synthesis, and writer is the right tool
for someone who needs to generate a document that's universally readable.
