5 predictions about OOXML in 2008

,----[ Quote ]
| The <NO>OOXML leaders spoke at the 24 Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin
| just before New Year. They predict that Microsoft will manage to have their
| broken standard adopted by ISO on the 1st of April 2008, after heavy lobbying
| and control of the discussions of the Ballot Resolution Meeting in Geneva.

Half the table at Geneva will be controlled by Microsoft, they reckon (to vote
on a Microsoft format for the 'benefit' of the world). It makes Venezuela
looks disciplined.

Rejoice at the sight of sheer Microsoft corruption. If you missed it, never
mind. We're seeing many such incidents nowadays (e.g. bribery in Nigeria).
Let's just keep our eyes open and report this.

Microsoft's Stephen McGibbon to represent Ireland at the BRM?

,----[ Quote ]
| There are rumors circulating in Ireland that Microsoft's Stephen McGibbon
| might be part of the Irish delegation to attend the BRM in Geneva. Microsoft
| is already controlling the Portuguese delegation, you can expect that they
| will control half of the table at Geneva. O'MyGod!

Portugal will send Microsoft to the BRM

| Microsoft, as president of the Portuguese Technical Committee, is already
| controlling who will be at the BRM for Portugal. The Head of Delegation will
| be... Microsoft!

IBM is still locked out of the Portuguese OOXML meeting

,----[ Quote ]
| In spite of various communications, we [IBM] are still locked out and will
| not be allowed to participate. Microsoft will be there, as well as a special
| Microsoft guest, as will various Microsoft business partners, and others.

Legacy format FUD

,----[ Quote ]
| From CyberTech Rambler (and Slashdot) comes the news that the Office 2003
| Service Pack #3 disables (blocks) access to a number of legacy document
| formats. Details are in this MS support article. Formats so blocked include
| legacy Lotus 1-2-3 and Corel Quattro Pro formats. Why? According to the
| Microsoft support article, "By default, these file formats are blocked
| because they are less secure. They may pose a risk to you.".
|
| [...]
|
| Now it may be entirely possible that these old import filters in Excel are
| poorly written and poorly maintained and that Microsoft may be trying to
| reduce the overall security exposure of MS Office by ditching old code that
| is not strategic for them. But call it that. The MS Office code has the
| problem. Don't malign the formats. Don't make up some untenable story that
| DIF format is "less secure" and "may pose a risk for you".

Microsoft Tech Ed 2007: OpenXML

,----[ Quote ]
| He was asked "Why did Microsoft push OOXML through the "Fast Track" process
| instead of the standard ISO process? Wouldn't they get less resistance than
| faced now?"
|
| His response was very frank: "Office is a USD$10 billion revenue generator
| for the company. When ODF was made an ISO standard, Microsoft had to react
| quickly as certain governments have procurement policies which prefer ISO
| standards. Ecma and OASIS are 'international standards', but ISO is the
| international 'Gold Standard'. Microsoft therefore had to rush this standard
| through. Its a simple matter of commercial interests!"
