Firefox had to have a reserve core userbase in the beginning. It
had to have somewhere to start from that was out of reach of Microsoft
and their abilitity to push around OEMs. It probably also needed a
large number of Linux/Unix developers in the beginning just to get
written.
This recent iteration of Mozilla only even exists now because
someone from the Linux community told Netscape corp how they could
help avoid Microsoft "cutting off their air supply".
Linux is a safe haven for web server and web browser alike as
well as for any Unix applications that might be pushed out of the
market by some Microsoft juggernaut.
