There are always some ``wise guys" who say that Windows too (old versions) can
empower old PCs, but this is fallacious and false as a comparison. With Linux
you get a fully patched kernel with a lot more state-of-the-art features that
include the best hardware support. Windows 98 doesn't even run Firefox IIRC
(not the recent versions).
