I see your point. TBH, I've had a lot of trouble compiling some package that I 
wrote a patch for (and compiled fine under Ubuntu). In Debian it just kept
complaining about f/lex deps that I spent hours trying to get around.
I don't think there's enougn control for this sort of stuff in repo-
oriented  distros. In Feodra I had similar problems compiling Octave 
(old versions, since the latest one in the repo had issue).
