Linux Humour

Roy loves SuSE

COMPARING computers a human:

SuSE is rather hard to get, but others say she likes everyone and is rather easy.

Interpretation: SuSE (Linux distribution, can be pronounced “Suzie”) is rather hard to get (5 ISO‘s to burn), but others say she likes everyone (hardware) and is rather easy (to use).

Zeppelin Disaster

A friend has just sent me the following mock-up image. He occasionally has a play with graphical software and other people’s photos are used in the process.

Zeppelin blast

So apparently I am responsible for one terrible disaster. I had never realised it until he told me.

The Road from Windows to Linux

If you are switching from Windows to Linux, be warned. An independent, small-scale study concludes that migrating from Linux (back) to Windows is hard. As Windows lacks the power and user-friendliness that Linux offers, frustration should be anticipated.

PenguinsA similar and older article uses sarcasm and outlines reasons not to use Linux. In practice, both articles which are cynical serve as primers to the advantages of using Linux.

If you choose to upgrade to Linux, be aware that rather than reading surveys, you can use a questionnaire-type utility to determine which Linux distribution suits you best.

Linux Advocacy Graphics

Malware magnet

AMUSING photos are appreciated whenever light entertainment is sought. So, in the past months I have created a few using the GIMP. Steve Ballmer is involved in two of these, both of which stem from discussions in the Linux advocacy newsgroup.

Lastly, I decided to give my own version of Microsoft Linux. I hereby present the box set of Microsoft Linux. Anti-virus and Service Packs are included free of extra charge.

Futile Resolutions

An old screenshot of one among several desktops

MY new year’s resolution will have been 1600×1200, but I think I need to purchase different monitors. I recently added a 5th and 6th virtual desktop, which extends an already large workspace as described in a previous item on virtual desktops. At the moment, my desktop is over 15,000 pixels wide! It is convenient to never have to open an application. The user merely brings it under focus using CTRL key bindings instead. The cost is memory, of course.

Artistic Bug

THIS not truly a bug, but rather an interesting occurrence, which has come up purely by coincidence. KasBar (part of KDE) gets snapshots of applications every 30 seconds by default. By doing so, it can display previews in a pseudo-taskbar that is visually rich. It gives a rough sketch of applications instead of text.

Earlier on today, I happened to hover over KasBar; subsequently I went away for a few minutes to prepare lunch. Here is what I saw when I came back. The preview had that ‘infinite mirror’ or picture-within-picture effect. Amusing or interesting at the least, no?

Linux Chauvinism

Laughing egg

BEARING in mind that humour should not be taken as reflectant of true views, here are a couple of sexist jokes that crossed my mind recently. [smile] I feel as though I need to unburden myself, getting them off memory and onto (non-volatile) text:

  • Last week I was approached by a girl with a SuSE laptop. Attractive one even (true story actually). I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her… machine.
  • If she had run a set of servers, I’d say she has a nice rack.

It would have be easier to use somebody else’s jokes, but that would be pointless. Surely, such humour becomes a deterrent to women in the IT industry. I believe it to be quite derogatory, so I was honestly on the verge of retracting the post. To borrow somebody else’s joke (Linønut from nntp://comp.os.linux.advocacy):

Windows is like an asshole. You need to wipe it quite often.
