Hard-Drives of the Future

Hard-drive

With larger hard-drives hitting the market every year and growth that obeys Moore’s Law, people begin to collect rich media on their workstation. Sooner or later, since greed for storage ups, space will run out.

Hitachi are presenting new technology that relates to storage in volume. This can break Moore’s Law in (potentially) the same way as optical and quantum computing. Terabyte hard-drives are near.

UK Rich List

BBC

Less than an hour ago, the BBC revealed the list of the UK’s richest people, which is an interesting read.

An overall increase in wealth means that the entry level for the Rich List has risen by 25% to £50m.

Am I the only one to conclude that more money is taken from the bottom to reach the Billionaires?

Pressing News

Wikinews

Some major news have just been released:

Jerry Seinfeld announces that he and the cast of Seinfeld plan on making 23 new episodes starting this fall. NBC expects to premier the new episodes in 2006.

Flickr Rests in Peace

Coffin

As some reader may already know, Flickr are among the most popular services for on-line photo sharing. A Yahoo takeover was announced yesterday.

This, in my humble opinion, will mark the end of ‘cleaner’, more decent photo galleries. It is only a matter of time until cherished Flickr will be ‘decorated’ with mugshots of Britney Spears and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. I am also worried that Yahoo will do to Flickr the same type of damage they did to Geocities, of which I was a member at the time. That acquisition, which goes back several years back, prevented me from making further changes to content and my pages were flooded with advertisements, from which Yahoo profited.

According to the sources of Slashdot:

This is the third high profile Blog/RSS related buyout of 2005. Live Journal was bought by Six Apart, while Ask Jeeves snapped up Bloglines.

Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer

Microsoft are beginning to see information about Internet Explorer 7 leak. For those who have not followed recent events, Microsoft decided to make the exception and release a browser that is not bundled to a particular version of Windows. This is due to the threat of Firefox, which now accounts for the majority of traffic on some sites. Internet Explorer 7 is expected to have improved security (presently a predominant flaw), tabbed browsing, a built-in news aggregator and more. Plenty of details are to be found in this article.

Tungsten 2005 – T6

Ralph from alt.comp.os.palm posted the following scoop:

The information I got yesterday from an unofficial announcement of the Palm developers is that the new (T6) will be called Tungsten 2005 and should have the following features:

  • OS 6 (with scalable fonts)
  • Bluetooth
  • Wavelan
  • 1 GB Flash
  • 3 Megapixel Cam
  • New connector (ethernet included)
  • VGA resolution 640 x 480
  • Graffiti 2 plus (with voice commands)
  • Interface to iTunes (Apple iPod)
  • The device is maximum 200 grams
  • Automatic software update over internet
  • Compatibility mode for pocket Windows is built in
  • Initial price is around $400
  • Launch date approx end of April

PrismTo me this sounds like PalmOne are back in the game with an excellent range of features, all for a reasonable price.

Sony Returns

Sony's playersiPod Shuffle
BBC

The BBC takes a glimpse at Sony’s new portable MP3 players, which somehow imitate the iPod shuffle.

Unlike hard disk-based players, (Sony’s) flash devices hold fewer songs, using solid state memory rather than a disk.

The Sony line-up includes MP3 players which hold a similar number of songs to the iPod shuffle – about 250 – but the players have much longer battery life.

The home of the Walkman finally realised the importance of this entertainment niche.
