Palm to HTML

It has been possible for quite some time to convert Palm data into well-linked HTML. At present, free tools are available for full conversion of AddressBooks and Memos. AddBook2Web does the former conversion and Memo2Web can handle the latter. The results (see example below) are rather raw HTML code which is easy to navigate through.

GameBoy on Palm

PalmAddict refer to MyPalmLife, who refer to Crimson Fire, who have released a Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance emulator for Palm.

With a large SD card, hundreds of Nintendo games can be carried in one’s pocket. Can this lead off a massive switch to Palm? Refer to PalmAddict for more information.

Yet Another Palm Bug

Last night I voiced a problem which I have experienced for over a year. Every once in a while, when using the shortcut stroke, text gets erased for no apparent reason. It turned out that other people suffer from the same problem and here is its cause, explained by James Anderson from alt.comp.sys.palmtops.pilot on January 3rd:

It’s a bug in the keyboard driver: every 16th shortcut it deletes the last 16 characters. The only solution is to disable the driver when you aren’t using the keyboard. When you enable the driver again its shortcut count will start over from zero.

As a strong Palm advocate, it disappoints me that fundametal mistakes can be made. Nonetheless, Palm devices remain notably stable.

Palm MP3 Player Selection Tips

Questions:

  • Which MP3 players are available for the Palm platform?
  • Which one is best to choose? (a question I will not answer)

Objective Answer:

  • AeroPlayer (left in image below) – Cons: No auto-sync with iTunes. Pros: Use of Ogg files instead of MP3 files makes the application 100% free! (hint: don’t tell anyone)
  • PocketTunes (middle) – Cons: Pricy; Windows is recommended. Pros: High-resolution support; Large variety of options.
  • RealPlayer (right) – Cons: Forces installation of additional (unnecessary) software upon PRC installation; Rather simple. Pros: Reliable; Easy to use.

Palm Embarrassment

Palm userUseNet participants from uk.comp.sys.palmtops and alt.comp.os.palm have come up with an SOS this morning. It turns out that Tungsten 5 and Tungsten E users (at least) are affected by a serious bug that can permanently disallow Palms from being switched off. The bug came into effect only yesterday. David Gerrie from uk.comp.sys.palmtops writes:

Solved!! Palm have put a fix on the website, all to do with birthday reminders apparently! Obviously posting here (UseNet) provided the impetus to fixing it!

Update: David Gerrie has E-mailed me the direct link to the solution. Here is his explanation:

It’s knowledge base article is number 26450. It’s not an actual patch, merely a workaround solution. Not sure if they are planning on patching or not..!

Laptop Redundancy

Palm TungstenIn the past year I have come to realise that I no longer need a laptop, or a telephone, or an MP3 player. Micro-device technology is advancing so quickly that it is able to match functionality of much larger ‘workhorses’. With a full-size folding keyboard, headphones and a PDA, one can be most productive anywhere at any time.

SD Card

Would you believe that 1 gram SD cards hold half a gig a gig of memory?

Web-Based Palm Desktop

PrismI enquired about the potential of Web-based Palm Desktop in UseNet. The main advantage is portability — either geographical portability or system portability, i.e. access to data from any operating system. Here is one response I received:

WeSync created a prototype web interface for their multi-user DateBook/AddressBook freeware, before Palm decided they didn’t like the idea. The code probably went to the purchasers of WeSync, Tanner Research, who are moving ahead with improvements. A discussion with them could be fruitful.

To be honest, I gave up on this entire idea. I want to see Palm surviving the PPC wave first.
