Godwin’s Law

Devil

In the past two days, I noticed the Nazi analogy being used twice in two separate newsgroups in UseNet. That was when the point when members brought Godwin’s Law to everyone’s attention.

As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one…

…whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress…

Google Reveal Ranking Method

Google Cookie

The great news to Webmasters is that Google have filed a patent and, in the process, exposed some secrets. One of the interesting revelations, for example, is that Google prioritise domains which have been registered for a long time. Google also maintain a link ‘sandbox’, which prevents quick growth of sites with spam content.

…Gone are the days of pages and pages full of link farms. You must grow your links slowly to stay below the radar and be careful who you exchange links with. That means no more buying hundreds of links at once or other underhand tactics…

Webmasters, read the site carefully. Many valuable tips are listed.

Yet Another Windows Patch

How long can this go on? The BBC reports that yet another Windows flaw has been discovered. And once again, hundreds of millions of obedient users will go out of their way and patch up their operating system.

Windows users are being urged to download the latest security updates from Microsoft to fix critical flaws.

The software giant has warned that three loopholes affecting Windows and Internet Explorer allow an attacker to take control of a personal computer.

In the mean time, ever since the Apple move to Intel, some people have installed pirated versions of Tiger (Mac OS X 1.4) on their Intel PC‘s.

“I Searched the Internet and all I Got was this Lousy Blog”

Question mark

In this day and age when people become more familiar with the term “blog”, there is a certain dissatisfaction — some would say an anti-climax.

Blogs are a linear form of publishing. There is barely any hierarchy and rarely a connection between items. There are no levels, sub-levels, or context and hence there is little or no interest in blog archives, which often become a graveyard. Fortunately, only about 5-10% of this site’s content is arranged in the form of a blog.

A Second Dot-Com Boom?

CNN have published an insightful article on the rebound of big dot-com Web sites. Although their arguments seem convincing, many will remain skeptical. Scott Kessler is among the skeptics:

I’d hesitate to characterize this is as comparable to what was going on in the late 1990s,” said Scott Kessler, an equity analyst with Standard & Poor’s. “Not every Internet stock is doing well.

Google Bourbon Revisited

Bourbon

Google results page (SERP‘s) have been unstable recently. This may have affected anyone using Google. It caused a great deal of distress to many Webmasters while others observed a significant, unexplainable surge in traffic. Unlike the many rumours, an article from WWW Coder draws a clearer picture:

Google is undergoing some of the most sweeping changes in its short, seven year history. As of next week, Google will have finished sorting what might be its largest algorithm shift ever as the final points of the 3.5 part Bourbon Update were installed last Monday. This update has been staggered into three and a half sections in order to avoid a massive amount of dislocation in established rankings as was seen in previous major updates. While changes stemming from the Bourbon Update have not actually manifested into a full reordering of Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs), many individual webmasters have reported fairly significant losses or gains in ranking over the past few days.

It is re-assuring to know that the folks at Google keep maintaining and improving their highly-ubiquitous search tool.

Free Emulators

Sonic

I discovered this long-standing site with a large number of links to just about any emulator type for a variety of operating systems. The ones of interest to me were Palm, Super Nintendo and Megadrive emulators for Linux.

I then took screenshots of some favourite old games: Mario, Street Fighter and Sonic.
