Tungsten 2005 – T6

Ralph from alt.comp.os.palm posted the following scoop:

The information I got yesterday from an unofficial announcement of the Palm developers is that the new (T6) will be called Tungsten 2005 and should have the following features:

  • OS 6 (with scalable fonts)
  • Bluetooth
  • Wavelan
  • 1 GB Flash
  • 3 Megapixel Cam
  • New connector (ethernet included)
  • VGA resolution 640 x 480
  • Graffiti 2 plus (with voice commands)
  • Interface to iTunes (Apple iPod)
  • The device is maximum 200 grams
  • Automatic software update over internet
  • Compatibility mode for pocket Windows is built in
  • Initial price is around $400
  • Launch date approx end of April

PrismTo me this sounds like PalmOne are back in the game with an excellent range of features, all for a reasonable price.

  1. McQ Says:

You’re joking, right? A device with those specs, in the current market, would cost more than a laptop. Even if they could make the device which I doubt. They’d never get the price down to $400.

  2. Roy Schestowitz Says:

I was not joking. I was not speculating about the price either, I was merely the courier.

Have a look at the price of the Dell Axims. If Dell can do it, PalmOne have a chance of finding inexpensive (yet reliable) hardware sources.

  3. Adrenochrome Says:

    Somehow, I just don’t think so…

They bring out the T5 at $400, and less than six months later they bring out the next model with everything anyone could wish for, and yet keep the price the same? And since when did a Tungsten have a camera?

How did you come across this info?

  4. Roy Schestowitz Says:

This rumour has been circulating in UseNet (several groups as of this afternoon). I don’t know if employees leaked out information and, if so, how trustworthy the information is.

  5. Mark Says:

I just hope they don’t sacrifice component quality to get the price down. Their 1.2 MP camera on the Zire 72 sucks like a black hole.

  6. Someone Says:

A camera and iTunes on a Tungsten business PDA? That’s so stupid I don’t know what to say. This rumor is clearly someone’s wishful thinking.

  7. Joe Says:

not that we have seen any pda in market that is anywhere close to 512MB RAM.

wonder why the ‘speculation/leak’ stops there, why not include what everyone wanted, a user replaceable 1500mAh battery, and inbuilt internal Wifi?

I’ll be the 1st to queue up with $400 for it.

But… wait it minute, it did say April, and not necessarity 2005, perhaps 2008?

  8. GadgetBoy Says:

Sorry, but it’s not going to happen. Palm stated at the end of 2004 that they would not release a Cobalt device in 2005 and had no definite plans for 2006. They said that the amount of work to bring the extra apps (web browser, email, etc.) up to the OS6 feature set is significant. So I would say that any rumor involving OS6 devices form PalmOne this year a just wishful thinking.

    Mark said:

That’s exactly what I feared when I first read the rumours. One of the powers of Palm PDA’s is that they last many years (for most).

  10. Craig Patchett Says:

Let me guess…April 1 release date, right?

  11. Farry Aprianto Says:

Any leak on Tungsten 2005 image?

  12. Junetech.com Says:

    Tungsten 2005?
According to this PalmOne is readying the Tungsten T6 or as it may be called, the Tungsten 2005. It is said to sport many features such as a new connector and iTunes interface, but the biggest feature may be that it will feature PalmOS 6 (Cobalt), whic…

  13. Dyor Says:

PalmOS is dead, until PalmSource won’t implement complete Unicode support.
All these excellent features are useless, if you cannot read unicode websites and mail. The reason of Windows Mobile superiority is unbeatable international support combined with simplicity. And since I’m not American, and use at least four languages (Russian, English, Ukrainian and Japanese) – that plays a role…

  14. stephan langella Says:

Love my T3 to death (the dents in the case prove it) very disappointed with the lack of leap forward in the T5. It was long time for not much so a new improved so early is not so unusual. If they can interface i-tunes & an ethernet connection??? screw the camera I’ll be updating anyway. now if only I could get a bose speaker set like the ipod???

  15. Mel Says:

    Gee.
To much of a ganja, my friend. Flower Power. Yep. Flower Power.

Quit smoking to much. Weed is bad.

  16. darren Says:

With the discounted packages i’ve been seeing on the T5 with an included WiFi card, i wouldn’t be surprised if there is a T5+ revision coming soon with WiFi built in. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

  17. PalmLinux Says:

The weakest part of the Palm is it’s OS. If you need a simple organizer for names addresses and schedualing these days it’s built into your cell phone. What we need are true pocket computers to navigate and shuttle the data we generate on our desktops. Until they get it through their heads that standards like JPEG, RTF, Doc, HTML, PDF, Etc… don’t belong to AN application, but must be accesesible by any aplication that can run on the system, Palm will continue to loose market and fail.

My Tungsten C is all the computer I need in my pocket. It’s just crippled by the crapiest OS on Earth.
